Archived "Words of the Week"

Mondegreen (n): Misinterpretation of a word or phrase that gives it a new meaning. For example, Jimi Hendrix' song Purple Haze has the line "Scuse me while I kiss the sky." Many hear the phrase as "Scuse me while I kiss this guy." This is a mondegreen. (Sept 5)

Approbation (n): An official approval, commendation or sanction. For example, "Marla and Tom have even received the approbation of their parents on hearing the news of their engagement." (Sept 12)

Pecuniary (adj): Relating to money or a monetary penalty. For example, "pecuniary loss." (Sept 19)

Thurify (v): Perfume, or odorize with an incense burning device (censer).  (Sept 26)

Rogitate (v): To ask frequently or repeatedly. (Oct 2)
